HVAC is an acronym for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. These are the components needed to keep your home comfortable in all seasons. There are many ways to heat a house, or at least a room, though most people rely on four main types. With the forced air system, the air is heated in a furnace. A blower pushes it through ducts then out of registers in the rooms. The cooled air is sucked down into return registers, which then send it back to the furnace. A boiler uses steam or hot water that is pumped through pipes and into radiators. Heat pumps are used in milder climates to both heats the home in the winter and cool it in the summer. Radiant heating systems use warm water or electricity that moves through loops in the floors or the walls, and solar heating draws energy from the sun through collectors that are usually placed on the roof.

Air Conditioning

Though ceiling or whole house fans are good ways to cool down the house, many people depend on an air conditioning unit powered by electricity. They can be central AC units or room units. Some are now portable, though they still need to be vented to the outside. One form of air conditioning that is becoming more popular is ductless mini splits. These units are often placed near the ceiling, and a group of them can be served by one evaporator. Another type of air conditioning is an air cleaner, which scrubs the air of particles too small for regular filters to handle. An air cleaner can also be thought of as part of the ventilation system.

Your home’s ventilation system is probably the simplest because sometimes all you need to do is open a window or a door to get air circulating. Your home also has vents for your clothes dryer, stove and other appliances. Fans, air cleaners, humidifiers, and dehumidifiers are also part of your ventilation system.
