Air QualityHow to Control Static Electricity in Your Home

May 22, 2019by dave

Static electricity is one of those annoyances to which you may have reluctantly become resigned. This is the source of sparks, fly-away hair and minor shocks. It’s caused by friction and promoted by dry conditions. Some of the things you can do to reduce or eliminate the problem require a small investment, but others only involve minor lifestyle adjustments, and they’re easy to implement. Here are a few things you can do to make a positive difference in your environment.

Reduce the Results of Friction

Try going barefoot. This may be completely against your personal preferences, but you would be amazed at the difference simply removing your shoes in the house can make. The more friction there is, the more static electricity you will experience. You can also spray your carpets with anti-static chemicals. There are specially designed products you can use to reduce the static that results from the typical friction of anything rubbing against your carpet.

Change the type of clothing you wear. Synthetic clothing materials can be replaced with natural fibers. These generate much less static electricity. When your hair wants to fly in all directions, it is simply due to static. Make sure that you use shampoos that are not overly drying. Another of the things you can do to make a difference is using lotions on a regular basis.

Get a Humidifier

A humidifier can reduce static electricity, make your air more comfortable to breathe and prevent wood in your home from cracking. A basic stand-alone unit might handle your problem, but if you inadvertently overdo it, you could cause mold and mildew. Fire & Ice Heating and Air can add a flow-through humidifier to any forced air heating system. This type of equipment is easy to maintain, and it doesn’t breed mildew or mold.

We offer solutions in humidification and air filtration as well as heating and cooling system installation, maintenance, and repairs.
